In response to the Government’s Spending Review, Jess McGregor, President of ADASS said:
“We know that investment in social care is critical to supporting more people to live independently at home or in their community for longer and reducing pressure on the NHS.
“So we welcome the extra £4bn for adult social care by 2028-29. Through a combination of council tax increases and other funding, this will make an important contribution to the additional costs of Adult Social Care, which is more in demand than ever and increasing in complexity as we are all living longer, often with multiple illnesses and disabilities. We look forward to seeing the detail of the new funding arrangements to assess the real impact it will have for people who draw on care and support.
“We also welcome the £100mn for community support for adults with complex needs and in particular the government’s underpinning principles of integration, prevention and devolution. We look forward to working and learning with Government as we seek to make best use of that funding with our local partners.
“We look forward to hearing more detail about the fair pay agreement and how the Government plans to fund a wage increase to properly value care workers.
“While this funding will help local councils continue to provide care and support to people in the short-term, it doesn’t solve longstanding issues such as access to care, workforce challenges and support for carers. We need to press ahead with the Casey Commission to find solutions which can bring sustainable reforms for the long term and build a care system that is there for everyone, when we need it.”
