In response to the announcement on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), Phil Holmes, ADASS President, said:

“We are pleased that the Government has responded to our significant concerns about the risks of Local Government Reorganisation to the capacity to support transition and the leadership pipeline for adult social care. Although we welcome the opportunities offered by unitary structures, any reform of this scale has risks for those who rely on councils across the country for care and support.

The additional funding for councils to help contribute to the huge costs of this transition for adult social care is very welcome. And the planned funding to support the significant number of new leaders required in adult social care to fill statutory and senior posts will also be very helpful.

But this remains a huge endeavour which will test the resilience and leadership of council social care departments to the limit. We remain committed to working with councils and the Government to make the transition as safe and seamless as possible.”
