Social Work Reform:  Progress, Opportunities and Challenges

Chair:  Jo Cleary, Chair of the College of Social Work

Main Participants:

Lyn Romeo, Chief Social Worker for Adults - Department of Health
Isabelle Trowler, Chief Social Worker for Children - Department of Education
Annie Hudson, Chief Executive of The College of Social Work

It is one year since Isabelle Trowler and Lyn Romeo were appointed as Chief Social Workers to drive reform of social work across adults’ and children’s services. In that time, we have seen progress across many areas of social work, including:

•    Social workers’ unique contribution recognised in regulations and guidance relating to the Care Act;

•    A consultation  on the knowledge and skills social workers should have at the end of their first year in employment;

•  The College of Social Work continuing to help shape and inform good practice and develop resources and services for members;

•   Principal Social Workers in place across the majority of Local Authorities.

Isabelle, Lyn and Annie Hudson, Chief Executive of the College, will jointly discuss progress on reform and the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Delegates will be invited to share their views on these and other issues in a Q&A. They will leave with a clear understanding of progress made to improve the quality of social work and a renewed recognition of the vital role social workers play in improving people’s lives.
