In response to the report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) and Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Inspectorate (HMCPSI), Association of Directors of Adult Social Care vice-president, James Bullion, said:

“We welcome this report as we know that abuse and exploitation unfortunately remain a real issue among older people.

“Nevertheless, elements of the report made for distressing reading, in particular the concerns regarding police recognition and engagement with safeguarding teams. Our members, working with Adult Safeguarding Boards, have noted with concern the growing significance and impact of financial scams as a major problem often overlooked. The protection of older people and their rights is a matter of justice and equality.

“We call for agencies to work together with the NPCC to highlight the issues, and to work with safeguarding boards to ensure that adult safeguarding has parity of importance with child protection.”
